Why does grooming cost more at Good Dog?
At Good Dog Premier Salon, we charge more for our services because we invest in highly skilled groomers, premium products, and personalized care for each dog. Our focus on quality means we take extra time to ensure every pet receives the best grooming experience possible. We also maintain a high standard of customer service and use top-notch tools and materials to ensure long-lasting results. Our clients are willing to pay a little more because they know their pets are in the best hands, and we’re committed to providing exceptional care every time.
Did you know there are NO licensing requirements or standards for opening a pet grooming business or becoming a pet groomer? That means that anyone can do anything they want, without any oversight or minimum requirements or experience. That means any type of product, equipment, skill level, etc. And often cheaper service prices are a reflection of less experience, lower quality equipment/products, higher volume (long hours kennel drying dogs to groom more dogs a day), lack of amenities in the building, and the list goes on because NOBODY is checking or inspecting grooming businesses.
At Good Dog Premier Salon we invested in the highest level professional industry standard equipment, designed a salon with safety and comfort for both humans and dogs, as the priority (AC/Heating, safe electrical system, ventilation system, sound proofing), use veterinarian grade sanitation products. and follow strict cleaning protocols. And most of all, our groomers continue in pursuing education and skill development through industry leading Trade shows and instruction. In an unlicensed, unregulated industry, that is the only way to maintain a standard of excellence we at Good Dog Premier Salon promise to deliver to our clients.

How often should I plan to bring my dog in for grooming?
For dogs requiring haircutting, we highly recommend a minimum of 6 weeks between grooming appointments. This maintenance schedule keeps your dog clean and comfortable by maintaining the length of hair in sanitary areas, around eyes/mouth, feet, as well as nail length, and an overall manageable length of coat. Many clients choose to alternate between a full haircut and a “tidy” appointment every 3-4 weeks. For hair cut requests longer than 3/4 inch, we require this type of maintenance schedule.
Some dogs only require baths or minimal trimming, yet we still highly encourage a 6-8 week frequency. This not only helps to reduce overall build up of undercoat (less shedding) but also allows for the maintenance of nails, skin and coat. It is an old wives’ tale that dog should not be bathed frequently. With the proper products and techniques, all dogs benefit from regular grooming.

At what age should my dog begin being groomed??
We strongly promote early exposure to professional grooming and handling starting at 12 weeks (3 months) for all dogs. Grooming salons can be stressful to dogs who were not properly introduced and conditioned to the grooming experience. Learning to be groomed and safely handled is part of early training and can lead to low stress, cooperative grooming experiences for the rest of the dog’s life.
We start off with introductory grooming for the first 3-4 monthly visits (beginning at 12 weeks) and gradually increase the exposure as the dog grows in size and developmental phase. By 6-9 months (after a minimum of 3 visits) your puppy should be acclimated enough to the process (developmentally ready )to receive its first full body haircut, right around the time of their first major coat change.
Please contact the salon directly to set up puppy visits so we can accommodate their special needs. All puppies MUST have a minimum of 2 rounds of DHPP vaccines to be in the salon.

What if my dog is nervous about grooming?
While our goal at Good Dog is for all our dog clients to be happy to see us, we understand that some dogs are not fans of grooming (just like some people do not particularly like going to the dentist!). Sometimes this is due to a past history of experiences, sometimes it is due to lack of early grooming conditioning, and sometimes it's just due to the dog’s unique personality and temperament.
There are many ways we are able to work with nervous dogs and we would be happy to work with you and your pet to find the approach that best fits the situation. Please communicate with us BEFORE requesting a reservation so we can make any necessary adjustments.
However, some dogs are too nervous or oppositional to grooming at a salon, and may be referred to a mobile, in-home or veterinary option for grooming. We will never force an overly stressed dog to be groomed as it is dangerous for the dog and staff, as well as the opposite of positive grooming rehabilitation.
-
How Long will my appointment take?
Appointment times vary by the service, dog size and coat type, level of comfort with the process, and a few other variables. At time of drop off we can provide an estimated time your dog will be ready fo pick up, but we do ask for flexibility as working with animals can have unforseen delays that can increase the amont of time your pet will be in the salon. We strive to minimize the amount of time your pet is waiting in the salon. When scheduling online the selected service will include an estimated service time.
Bath services can take 1-3 hours and grooming services can take 1-4 hours depending on the size, coat type and service.

Why do you require proof of rabies vaccination ?
Oregon Health Authority requires all dogs to be vaccinated against the rabies virus. For the safety of our staff and other dogs in the salon, we ask clients to provide proof of current rabies vaccine. Puppies under 6 months are only required to provide proof of 2 rounds of DHPP. Other exemptions are allowed, please contact the salon for more information.

What if my dog has special requirements?
Please contact the salon so that we can discuss accommodation options we can provide. We strive to provide services for all types of circumstances, but we will always default to what is in the best interest of the dog, as well as prioritizing safety. If we can not provide services for your dog, we will try our best to suggest other options that may be a better fit for your dog’s situation.

Do you offer walk in nail trims?
Nail trims are offered by appointment only for dogs that meet our eligibility requirements ( find those Here). Additionally, we require nail trim clients to be on a 4 week schedule. This is the amount of time we believe is in the best interest for the dog to retain a healthy nail length. After the first visit, we require the next nail trim reservation to be made, along with a 50% non refundable deposit. Please contact the salon with any questions.

Do you groom cats?
No, we do not groom Cats. Our salon was designed to accommodate dog grooming only. While we love cats, we don’t have the proper facility to safely groom them.

What is the point of a membership?
Professional high quality grooming is a very high demand service. Currently there is a shortage of experienced groomers, due to the lack of regulations and certification requirements.
We offer memberships to clients who would like their pets to take priority in booking. We charge an annual fee to account for the administration time it takes to pre schedule and maintain recurring appointments. Often we must spend time outside of the business hours to maintain the schedule, history and correspondence for appointments. We have created membership programs to encourage clients who are dedicated to keeping their dogs on specific schedules, or prefer appointments during high volume times (holidays and weekends).
We do not require membership for all services, but priority in booking will be given to members first.
Memberships will guarantee your dog remains a client as our popularity grows and we may not always be able to accommodate new clients.
We are so grateful for our loyal clients that we have created other benefits and perks for members as well. Please see our membership page for more details!
